Frequently asked questions

What is n8n?

n8n is a workflow automation tool. You connect apps with nodes on a canvas: a trigger starts the flow, and each node does one job, such as reading a sheet, calling an API or asking an AI model. It is fair-code, which means the source is public and you can host it yourself.

Self-hosted n8n or n8n Cloud: which is better?

n8n Cloud is run by n8n and billed by plan and executions. Self-hosted n8n runs on a server you control, with no per-execution fees, but someone has to manage backups, updates and security. We do that part for you, so you get the control without the admin work.

Are there really no per-execution fees?

On the self-hosted community edition, n8n does not charge per workflow run. You pay for the server and our management. Some enterprise features, such as SSO, need a paid n8n licence; we tell you upfront if your setup needs one.

Can n8n build AI agents on our own data?

Yes. n8n has AI agent nodes that can read your sheets, documents or database, call tools you approve and keep a log of every step. We add limits and a hand-over to a person for anything the agent should not decide alone.

Can you move my Zapier or Make workflows to n8n?

Yes. We list your current zaps or scenarios, rebuild them in n8n, run both side by side with real data and switch over only when the results match. Nothing goes dark during the move.

Where is my data stored, and who can access it?

On the private server where your n8n runs. Credentials are encrypted, the server is reached over SSL and only our automation team has admin access. If you prefer, we can install and manage n8n on a server in your own account instead.

What if we want to leave later?

Your workflows are yours. n8n exports them as files, and we hand over the exports, the documentation and the credentials list so another team or your own server can take over.
